"Dir en grey (Kaoru and Kyo) appear in Fool's Mate this month with Slipknot side project Glam Rockers the Murder Dolls (J and Wednesday 13). It's pretty interesting. They talk about differences between Japanese and American rock and the Murderdoll's chime in on what they think of the Japanese Visual-kei scene.
I think Kaoru and Kyo sum up what visual-kei was all about when they say, "It's not music created by humans, it's made by monsters"
The murderdolls impression of Dir en grey was favorable. They said, "They do goth rock but not just, they do kind of nu-metal stuff, but it's not really nu-metal the way Americans do it. They don't sound like anyone else out there."
When the Murderdolls mention that they had Melt Banana open for them before, Dir en grey sheds some light on why the Japanese music scene is so genre oriented, in that there are little oppurtunities to garner interest outside of their niche. Kaoru explains it as, "In America when you go on a nationwide tour with 40 stops that can be a huge undertaking, that goes on for a year, so you bring along some other acts and get exposure to new audiences. In Japan a nationwide tour is over in a month."
Kyo on shock: "I was doing that (fake blood, cream, etc) but I started to feel that it was all too fake. I realized it was that much more shocking when I started clawing at my chest and drew real blood."
The murderdolls' (Wed13) countered this by saying the only way he could shock the audience these days was by brushing his teeth on stage.
The Murderdolls tried to encourage Dir en grey to bring their act to the States to open up new audiences even leaving an open invite to do a show together.
Kaoru on Dir en grey in the US: "It's not like 'we're aiming for America!', but it would be great to play in front of new audiences. When and if we do make it to America, we want it to be like we're on the offensive, not that we're doing a promotional thing."
(Bits in this blurb were paraphrased by me from memory of a magazine I read last night.) "
Thank you, burara@hotmail.com, for posting this!
Ok first, lemme say this....EWWWW Murderdolls! Okay, to be fair, I tried listening to their stuff once, but I really don't remember them at all. Heck, at least it wasn't Insane Clown Posse who I absolutely loathe. Um, Kaoru and Kyo..... how is VK music created by "monsters"? I really don't understand that...I guess it's b/c I'm associating "monster" with a sound not unlike Slipknot, Mudvayne, Mushroomhead, and the rest. Murderdolls got it right when they said that Dir en grey were very diverse in style. It's one of the reasons I adore Deg ;) Heh, and Murderdolls also mentioned Melt Banana....I can't believe MB would open for that band! They are so spastic (Melt Banana, that is). I remember when a friend of mine told me about them and I downloaded a few of their tracks off Audiogalaxy (back when it was still free). I'm glad Kyo dropped that stupid fake blood shit. I thought it was really stupid. I do enjoy him marking and clawing himself...love it. Whoa, and OUCH on the comment on Kyo's teeth. I wonder how he reacted to that? Considering that Kyo seriously needs dental work (I still love you, Kyo!!!).
Please, please, please don't let Dir en grey open for Murderdolls EVER! That will be horrible! Nooooooo! Well, at least Deg will be in the States (giving me a chance to stalk them hahahahhaa...j/k ;) really). If I do go to their show, I'll leave after Deg's finished on stage. Screw Murderdolls. I agree w/Kaoru. Hit the small venues, I don't care. Just don't open for Murderdolls!
